Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Michael receives an unexpected letter from a lawyer in Cape Town, revealing that his father Mike had a long-lost brother who left an inheritance, forcing Michael to confront a new branch of his family and decide whether to accept a gift that could change their lives.
The morning after little Mike's birth, the world felt different to Michael. The sun seemed brighter, the air sweeter. He woke to the sound of his son's soft cries and Nandi's gentle shushing. He lay still for a moment, listening to the rhythm of their new life, then rose to make tea.

He came home each evening to find Nandi waiting with their son, and they would sit together on the narrow porch, watching the street come alive with children playing and neighbors calling to one another.
Thandi visited often, bringing pots of stew and bundles of cloth for the baby. She held little Mike as if he were made of glass, her weathered face softening with each coo and gurgle. "He has your father's eyes," she said one afternoon, and Michael felt a pang of longing mixed with pride.
