The air in the Duke’s grand study was thick, not with the usual scent of old parchment and polished mahogany, but with a palpable tension that prickled Arthur’s skin. He felt like a stray cat that had somehow wandered into a lion’s den, and the lions were currently pacing with a distinctly regal brand of agitation. Seraphina, looking impossibly regal herself in a gown that shimmered like moonlight on water, stood beside him, her hand a comforting, albeit slightly trembling, presence on his arm.

Duke Alistair, a man whose stern features seemed carved from granite, raked a hand through his silver hair. “Gone,” he boomed, the word echoing in the cavernous room. “Simply… vanished.”

Duchess Isolde, perched on a velvet settee that could likely house a small family of dragons, let out a dramatic sigh that would have impressed even the most seasoned opera singer. “Alistair, darling, are you quite certain you haven’t misplaced it?
