Chapter 17
Valerius Revealed
The final confrontation began. Valerius dropped his facade, revealing his true, monstrous form, a harbinger of the darkness he served. The fate of the kingdom hung in the balance.
The great hall, once a beacon of royal splendor, now echoed with a chilling silence. The air, thick with anticipation, crackled like a storm about to break. Anya stood, a solitary figure against the opulent backdrop, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs. Before her, Lord Valerius, his handsome features contorted into a snarl, shed the last vestiges of his courtly pretense. The deception, so carefully woven, unraveled in the stunned gasps of the assembled courtiers.
He was no longer the charming nobleman who had promised to restore order. The transformation was not merely of spirit, but of flesh. A guttural growl rumbled from his chest, deeper and more resonant than any human voice. His eyes, once a piercing blue, now glowed with an unnatural, malevolent crimson, like embers fanned by an infernal wind. The graceful lines of his form began to warp, elongating and twisting in ways that defied nature. His skin, once smooth and tanned, took on a pallid, almost translucent hue, veins throbbing beneath its surface like dark rivers.
Anya watched, a disquieting mix of terror and morbid fascination gripping her. This was the darkness the prophecies had spoken of, not a creeping shadow, but a hideous, embodied entity. Valerius’s hands, once used to grasp a goblet or gesture with refined ease, now contorted, his fingers thickening, nails elongating into sharp, obsidian claws. A faint, acrid smell, like burnt sulfur and something ancient and foul, began to permeate the air, making the onlookers gag and recoil.
