Valerius, sensing Anya's growing power and the threat she posed, intensified his efforts to find and eliminate her. He sent his agents, shrouded in darkness, to hunt her.

The air in the hidden grove grew thick with an unspoken tension, a palpable thrumming beneath the ancient oaks that had always offered Anya solace. Tonight, however, their rustling leaves sounded like a chorus of warnings, each whisper a prelude to a storm. Master Elara’s gaze, usually a calm pool reflecting starlight, was now troubled, her brow furrowed as she traced patterns in the dew-kissed earth with the tip of her staff. Anya, perched on a moss-covered stone, felt the prickle of unease crawl up her spine. She had learned to read Elara’s silences as keenly as her words, and this one spoke of encroaching danger.

"They are closer," Elara stated, her voice barely a breath against the night breeze. It wasn’t a question, but a somber pronouncement.

Anya’s heart gave a familiar lurch. The “they” Elara spoke of were no longer mere shadows in the periphery of her awareness. They were the agents of Lord Valerius, the man whose name had begun to surface in hushed, fearful tones amongst the villagers Anya occasionally encountered on her errands. He was a name synonymous with power, with ambition, and now, with a growing darkness that seemed to seep from the very heart of the kingdom.
