Anya’s breath hitched in her throat as she followed Master Elara deeper into the labyrinthine passages, each step echoing with a hollow finality. The torches Elara carried, conjured from thin air with a whisper of arcane energy, cast dancing shadows that writhed like tormented spirits against the crumbling stone. They clung to the very essence of this place, a testament to its age and the secrets it guarded.
“The stones here remember,” Elara murmured, her voice a low, resonant hum that seemed to vibrate within Anya’s bones. “They absorb the echoes of all that transpires within their embrace.” She paused, her gaze, usually so steady, flickered with a shadow of unease. “And these stones remember a great sorrow, a betrayal that stained the very foundations of this kingdom.”
Anya’s hand instinctively went to the roughspun tunic that concealed her from the world, the fabric a constant reminder of her perceived worthlessness.
