Chapter 5
The Glimmer of Kindness
Thabo visits Mr. Mokoena's small shop. The kind shopkeeper, noticing Thabo's sharp mind and desperation, offers him a small, legitimate job – a stark contrast to his current life.
The midday sun beat down on Thabo’s neck, a familiar, almost comforting warmth that usually signaled the height of his day’s work. The bell above the door gave a cheerful jingle as Thabo pushed it open, announcing his arrival. Mr. Mokoena, perched on a stool behind the counter, carefully polishing a tarnished brass scale, looked up. His face broke into a warm smile, crinkling the corners of his eyes. “Ah, Thabo! Come in, come in. The sun is strong today, you must be thirsty.”
