The afternoon sun beat down on Elias Street, its heat a familiar blanket over Soweto. Thabo, his hands dusted with flour from the bakery, felt a different kind of warmth spreading through him today. It was the quiet satisfaction of a job well done, the steady rhythm of Mr. Mokoena’s shop a welcome counterpoint to the chaotic symphony of the streets he’d once called his office. He’d spent his mornings now for weeks dusting shelves, sweeping floors, and learning the art of polite conversation with customers, all under Mr. Mokoena’s watchful, encouraging gaze. The small wage that found its way into his pocket felt heavier, more substantial, than any coin he’d ever earned through the quick, furtive transactions of his past.
He was arranging a display of brightly coloured sweets, his brow furrowed in concentration, when a shadow fell over him. It was a familiar shadow, one that had always carried a chill, no matter how hot the sun. Sipho.
Thabo’s heart gave a nervous flutter, a reflex honed by countless encounters. He didn’t turn immediately, continuing to place a packet of chewy sweets with deliberate care. “Sipho,” he said, his voice neutral, betraying none of the unease churning within him.
