The afternoon sun, usually a vibrant splash of gold across the dusty streets of Soweto, seemed to cast a softer, more introspective light on Mr. Mokoena’s tuck shop. Thabo, his small hands meticulously arranging packets of Ouma Rusks, felt a different kind of warmth emanating from the shopkeeper today. It wasn't the usual gentle encouragement or the quiet approval that had become so familiar. Today, Mr. Mokoena’s eyes held a depth, a flicker of something that mirrored the shadows Thabo sometimes saw in his own mother’s gaze – a history etched in moments of hardship.

They were alone, the usual afternoon rush of shoppers having subsided. The scent of spices, sweet biscuits, and something vaguely medicinal hung in the air, a comforting, familiar perfume. Mr. Mokoena, leaning against the counter, his gaze fixed on a point beyond the open doorway, cleared his throat. "Thabo," he began, his voice low, a rumble that seemed to stir memories within him. "You remind me of myself, a long time ago."

Thabo paused, the Ouma Rusk halfway to its place. He tilted his head, his brow furrowed with a curiosity he tried to keep hidden. He knew Mr. Mokoena was a man of quiet wisdom, but he had never spoken of his own past, not in any detail. "You, baas?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.
