An opportunity arises for Thabo to make quick money through a dishonest means related to the shop. He faces a moral dilemma, choosing between easy gain and his developing principles.

The smell of fresh bread, a scent Thabo had once associated with warmth and Sunday mornings, now mingled with the metallic tang of fear that always seemed to cling to the edges of his life. Mr. Mokoena’s shop, with its shelves neatly stacked and the gentle hum of the refrigerator, was an oasis of order in the chaotic landscape of his days. But even here, the shadows of the street, the whispers of quick cash and easier paths, found ways to creep in.

It started subtly, a furtive glance from a customer, a hushed conversation he couldn't quite make out, but the unease settled in Thabo’s gut like a stone. He was stacking tins of pilchards, his movements practiced and efficient, when Sipho appeared at the shop entrance. Sipho’s presence was like a sudden drop in temperature, a predator entering a hen house. Mr. Mokoena, engrossed in his ledger, didn't immediately notice, but Thabo did. His heart gave a familiar, unwelcome lurch.

Sipho’s eyes, sharp and assessing, swept over the shop, lingering on Thabo for a moment before settling on the counter. He sauntered towards it, a swagger in his step that spoke of a man who believed he owned the ground he walked on. “Mokoena,” he drawled, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate with suppressed menace. “Long time no see. Everything… profitable?”
