The scent of roasted peanuts and something less definable, a mix of dust and exhaust fumes, was the usual perfume of Thabo’s world. But here, within the cool, shadowed confines of Mr. Mokoena’s shop, a different aroma prevailed: the faint, comforting smell of paper, polish, and the sweet, earthy notes of dried herbs hanging in neat bundles from the ceiling. It was a quiet symphony, a stark contrast to the cacophony of the streets, and Thabo found himself breathing it in, letting it settle his restless spirit.

Mr. Mokoena, his face etched with the kind lines of a life lived with purpose, moved with a gentle efficiency behind the counter. Today, his hands, usually occupied with weighing out sugar or counting out change, were busy arranging tins of beans and packets of flour onto a shelf. Thabo stood beside him, a small, eager shadow, his eyes darting from the tins to the neat rows of goods, absorbing everything.

“This one goes here, Thabo,” Mr. Mokoena said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated with warmth. He pointed to a stack of canned beans. “Always keep the newer stock behind the older. That way, nothing goes to waste.”
