The 'Talent' Show Fiasco

Leo stood on the makeshift stage, a wobbly collection of old crates and a faded picnic blanket, his heart thumping like a hummingbird’s wings. He’d announced it with a flourish, a bold sign scrawled in crayon: “Leo’s Amazing, Astonishing, Absolutely Astounding Juggling Show!” The problem was, Leo’s juggling skills were, to put it mildly, more astonishing than amazing. And absolutely astounding in their ability to go wrong.

He had three bright red apples, polished to a shine, and a determined glint in his eye. His audience consisted of a few curious neighbors who’d been drawn by the commotion. There was Mrs. Gable, her kind eyes crinkling at the corners as she offered a gentle smile from her porch swing. Across the street, Mr. Henderson, who usually grumbled about noisy children, was leaning out his window, a flicker of amusement on his usually stern face. And then there were the twins, Timmy and Tommy, their faces pressed together in anticipation, giggling already. Leo’s mom, bless her, was peeking from behind their curtains, a mixture of pride and worry etched on her face. She’d given him a kiss and a whispered, “Do your best, sweetheart,” before retreating, no doubt to wring her hands.

Leo took a deep breath, channeling the confidence he’d seen in the circus performers on TV. He tossed the first apple into the air. It arced gracefully, catching the sunlight. He tossed the second. Then the third. For a glorious, heart-stopping moment, all three apples were suspended in the air, a perfect triangle against the blue sky. Leo beamed. This was it! The big break! He was going to be rich! He imagined the gleam of the super-cool bicycle, the wind in his hair as he zoomed down the street.
