Chapter 7
A Neighbor's Watchful Eye
Kind Mrs. Gable observes Leo's determined, if clumsy, efforts. She sees his bright spirit beneath the failed schemes and smiles, a thoughtful idea forming.
Mrs. Gable’s porch swing creaked a gentle rhythm, a soft counterpoint to the distant shouts of kids playing and the rumble of Mr. Henderson’s ancient lawnmower two streets over. From her vantage point, nestled amongst overflowing petunias and sturdy geraniums, she had a perfect view of Leo’s world. She’d been watching him, you see, for a good many weeks now. Not in a nosy way, oh no, but in the way a gardener watches a particularly determined sprout, cheering it on through sun and storm.
Leo, bless his energetic heart, was a whirlwind. He was the kind of boy who tackled life with both fists, even if he occasionally tripped over his own feet in the process. Mrs. Gable had seen it all. She’d witnessed the valiant, albeit slightly sticky, attempt at a lemonade stand, where the lemons seemed to have a mind of their own, rolling away like runaway marbles. She’d chuckled softly at the image of Leo, no bigger than a sturdy gnome, trying to wrangle a pack of enthusiastic dogs on a leash that seemed determined to tie themselves into Gordian knots. The car washing escapade, with its liberal application of suds and Leo himself ending up more soapy than the cars, had brought a tear to her eye from laughing. And the mail mystery? Well, that had been a particularly perplexing one, involving a very confused squirrel and a surprisingly large number of acorns.
Through it all, Leo’s spirit remained remarkably unbent. He’d dust himself off, a smudge of dirt on his cheek, a determined glint in his eye, and he’d be off again, his mind already buzzing with the next grand scheme. Mrs. Gable saw the flicker of disappointment that sometimes crossed his face, a shadow quickly chased away by a renewed burst of optimism. She saw the way he’d sometimes sigh, a tiny puff of air, when another plan didn't quite pan out, but then, with a shake of his head, he’d be off, his little legs pumping, his dreams still firmly in sight.
