Chapter 6
The Mystery of the Missing Mail
Leo tries delivering flyers, but a mischievous gust of wind turns his meticulously stacked papers into a confetti storm across the block. He chases them with comical desperation.
The sun, a cheerful, oversized marmalade stain on the sky, was just beginning to warm the pavement as Leo stepped out of his front door, a neat stack of colorful flyers tucked under his arm. Today’s hustle was flyer delivery. He’d seen a sign at the community center advertising a “Bake Sale Bonanza” to raise funds for new park benches. Surely, handing out flyers for delicious treats would be a piece of cake, or rather, a piece of pie. He’d even practiced his most professional-looking smile in the cracked mirror by the hallway, a smile that said, “I am a responsible flyer distributor, and I bring tidings of sugary delights!”
His route was mapped out in his head: Mrs. Gable’s house first, then Mr. Henderson’s, then a zigzag through Elm Street, ending at the corner store. He imagined the grateful smiles, the whispered “thank yous,” and maybe, just maybe, someone would slip him a spare cookie as a tip. He’d already mentally spent the hypothetical earnings on a new tire for his scooter.
He started with Mrs. Gable’s porch, carefully placing a flyer in her mailbox. She was always so nice, her garden a riot of blooming colors that made him feel like he’d stepped into a painting. As he turned to leave, a sudden, playful gust of wind, like a mischievous puppy chasing its tail, swooped around the corner. It tugged at his shirt, ruffled his hair, and then, with a dramatic flourish, snatched the remaining flyers from his grasp.
