Mrs. Gable approaches Leo. Seeing his earnestness, she offers him a small, steady job: helping her with gardening and errands. It's not glamorous, but it's reliable.
Leo’s heart felt a little heavy, like a deflated balloon after a party. The grand plans of yesterday, the elaborate schemes that had ended in a flurry of soap suds or a chorus of barking dogs, had all come up short. He’d counted his coins again that morning, the meager pile glistening dully in the morning light. It was nowhere near enough for the gleaming, rocket-red bicycle that sat in the window of Mr. Henderson’s bike shop, practically winking at him. He sighed, a puff of air that barely stirred the dust motes dancing in the sunbeam slanting across his worn rug.
He was sitting on his front stoop, chin in his hands, watching a ladybug meticulously climb a blade of grass, when he heard a gentle voice. “Leo, dear? Is that you looking so glum?”
He looked up, his face brightening a little at the sight of Mrs. Gable. Her smile was like a warm blanket on a chilly day, and her eyes, behind her round spectacles, always held a spark of kindness. She was watering her prize-winning petunias, her movements slow and graceful.
