Leo’s mom watched him from the kitchen window, a gentle frown creasing her brow. The afternoon sun, usually a cheerful presence, seemed to cast a tired light on her son as he trudged up the street, his shoulders slumped a little more than usual. He’d just returned from another ‘hustle,’ this one involving attempting to sell homemade friendship bracelets that, Leo admitted with a sigh, looked more like tangled yarn than wearable art. The few coins he’d earned jingled sadly in his pocket, a meager reward for hours of enthusiastic, if not entirely successful, effort.

She knew Leo’s heart was in the right place. She knew he was dreaming of that bicycle, the one with the chrome handlebars that shimmered like a captured rainbow, the one he’d spent hours staring at through the window of Mr. Henderson’s bike shop. His determination was a bright spark, a flame she admired. But lately, that spark seemed to be flickering, fueled by too much effort and not enough rest. He was a child, after all, not a seasoned entrepreneur.

When Leo finally pushed open the front door, his usual boisterous greeting was muted. He tossed his backpack onto the worn rug with a thud that echoed his weariness.
