The weight of the temporal fracture pressed down on Elara, a suffocating blanket woven from shattered moments and the ghosts of what might have been. She found herself in Lyra’s quiet study, a sanctuary of ink-stained parchment and the comforting scent of dried herbs, a stark contrast to the unsettling flux that had become her world. Sunlight, filtered through dust motes dancing in the air, painted stripes across the polished wood of the desk where Lyra sat, her brow furrowed in concern.

“You look as though you’ve wrestled with time itself, Elara,” Lyra said, her voice a gentle balm. Her fingers, usually deft with a quill, were still, resting on an open tome. The air around them hummed with a quiet intimacy, a shared space untouched by the unraveling realities outside.

Elara traced the rim of her teacup, the ceramic cool against her fingertips. “Perhaps I have, Lyra. The whispers… they grow louder. And the visions…” She trailed off, the fragmented images of a collapsing cityscape and a masked figure with eyes like burning embers still searing the back of her eyelids. “It’s as if the world is unraveling, thread by thread.”
