The air in Elara’s small study, usually thick with the comforting scent of aged parchment and dried ink, had begun to taste of static. It was a subtle shift, one she might have dismissed as fatigue or the lingering unease from her fragmented dreams, had it not been for the way the very molecules of the air seemed to vibrate. Lyra, perched on a stool by the window, her brow furrowed in concentration as she traced a constellation on a star chart, seemed oblivious. But Elara felt it, a discordant hum beneath the symphony of the ordinary, a tremor in the fabric of existence that spoke of something profoundly wrong.
It began with a whisper, a sound that wasn't a sound, more a pressure against her eardrums. Then, the light in the room flickered, not like a faulty lamp, but as if the sun itself had blinked. Elara’s gaze snapped to the window. Outside, the sky, a familiar canvas of sapphire and pearl, was rippling. It was like watching a reflection on water disturbed by an unseen stone, the edges of buildings blurring, the distant mountains wavering as if sketched in charcoal and then smudged.
“Lyra,” Elara’s voice was barely a breath, tight with a sudden, cold dread. “Do you see that?”
