Marcus, Maya, and Thorne escape the tower by jumping into the woods after a warning shot, leaving Derrick to surrender. They find an old ranger station with a working radio. Thorne contacts the Missouri State Police before Derrick appears, wounded, warning that the convoy is approaching.
The crack of the gunshot rang through the night, sharp and final. Marcus’s heart stopped. He grabbed the railing, staring down into the blinding light. Derrick was still on the stairs, his hands up, but he wasn’t moving. The spotlight held him like a bug pinned to a board.
“Derrick!” Maya’s voice broke, raw and desperate.
A voice from below, amplified by the loudspeaker: “Next one won’t miss. Come down slow. All of you.”
