Chapter 5
The group escapes the cabin basement through a coal chute and heads toward the factory. Thorne goes ahead to the roof while Marcus, Maya and Derrick infiltrate via a maintenance door. They begin contaminating the precursor vats, but Vance arrives with guards and activates the airborne compound. Thorne crashes through a vent and injects Vance with a sedative. They flee into the woods as the compound takes effect inside the factory. Thorne reveals they need to reach an old fire tower for clean air; Marcus agrees reluctantly, but promises to return for the town.
The basement smelled like mildew and old dirt. Marcus pressed his back against the wall, the metal case digging into his ribs. He could feel Maya's breath on his arm, quick and shallow.
Above them, boots thudded across the floorboards. A voice—gruff, impatient—said something he couldn't make out. Another voice answered, laughter cutting through the dark.
Thorne crouched near the stairs, one hand on the railing, the other holding his flashlight off. His face was a mask of concentration.
