Chapter 20
The group drives toward Miller’s Creek airstrip to stop the plane. Sarah reveals the layout. They split up: Sarah creates a diversion while Thorne and Marcus contaminate the fuel with the catalyst. Sarah is shot in the shoulder but survives. They escape, leaving the plane grounded. The chapter ends with them driving into the dark, a siren wailing in the distance.
The truck smelled like creek water and rust. Marcus’s mother sat between him and Maya, her shoulder pressed against his, her breathing shallow but steady. Thorne drove with both hands on the wheel, headlights off, navigating by the moon.
“How far?” Marcus asked.
“Twenty minutes, maybe less,” Thorne said. “If the road holds.”
