Chapter 17
The Campion Motel
Marcus, Maya, and Thorne confront Corbin at the farmhouse, where Thorne offers a fake trade with a metal cylinder. Marcus spots his mother's location—the Campion Motel—on the phone screen. He lunges for the phone, and they escape into the woods after a shootout. Examining the video, they realize Corbin lied about her being at the fairgrounds. They set out for the Campion Motel to rescue her.
Marcus stood frozen, his mother's face filling the screen. She looked tired, scared, but alive. The phone was all he could see—Corbin’s hand holding it like a trophy.
“You’re lying,” Maya said, her voice low. “She’s not there.”
Corbin smiled, slow and easy. “She’s in the VIP section, front row. I wanted her to have a good view when the new formula releases. It’s a lot more… theatrical than the last batch.”
