Chapter 15: The Last Cog
Derrick reveals he has been working for the organization and was forced to shoot the chemist to protect his family. A standoff ensues; Maya and Marcus escape, neutralize the catalyst, and disarm Derrick, but Vance and a mysterious suited man interrupt the confrontation.
Derrick's pistol hung steady, the muzzle aimed at Marcus's chest. The chemist lay crumpled at their feet, blood pooling across the concrete floor. The lab's fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting everything in a sickly yellow glow.
"Derrick, what are you doing?" Maya's voice cracked. She still held her sketchbook, the molecular diagram fresh on the page.
"What I should've done hours ago." Derrick's eyes were hard, the easy grin gone. "You think I wanted any of this? The cabin, the chase, the gunshot? I was trying to keep you alive, Marcus. But you wouldn't let it go."
