The air in the dusty archive room was thick with the scent of decaying paper and forgotten secrets. Father Michael, his brow furrowed in concentration, traced the faded ink of a brittle manuscript. Elias, standing beside him, felt a familiar prickle of unease, a sensation that had become a constant companion since the whispers began. He watched as Father Michael’s fingers, usually so steady, trembled slightly as he turned a page.
"This… this is incredible, Elias," the priest murmured, his voice hushed, as if afraid to disturb the slumbering past. "The founding charter. It speaks of the church not just as a place of worship, but as a sanctuary. A place meant to 'ward off the encroaching shadows and mend the broken spirit.'"
Elias nodded, a knot of apprehension tightening in his chest. The shadows. He knew about those shadows. They were the ones that had been clawing at the edges of his vision, the ones that whispered promises of power and despair. "But the artifact, Father? What does it say about the artifact?"
