Chapter 6
Faith as a Shield
Elias understands his faith is not passive but a weapon. He must actively wield his belief, empowered by Scripture and Father Michael's growing conviction, to protect the artifact.
The air in the hidden chamber had grown thick, not with dust, but with a palpable, suffocating dread. Elias, his heart a frantic drummer against his ribs, felt it pressing in, a physical weight that threatened to crush him. The whispers, which had once been faint murmurs at the edge of his hearing, now coiled around him like icy serpents, hissing insidious doubts and temptations. “Weakness,” they slithered, “doubt. Your faith is a fragile thing, easily broken.”
He looked at the artifact, a simple wooden cross, yet it pulsed with a faint, ethereal light, a beacon against the encroaching darkness. And then he saw him. Not a spirit, not a ghost, but something far more chilling. A man, or the semblance of one, cloaked in shadows that seemed to drink the very light from the chamber. His face was a blur of malevolence, eyes like chips of obsidian burning with an ancient, avaricious hunger. This was the figure from his visions, the one who had haunted his dreams with promises of power and whispers of despair.
Father Michael stood beside him, his face a mask of bewildered terror. The priest’s skepticism, once a comforting shield, had been shattered in the face of what they had witnessed. The fragmented records, the inexplicable accidents, the chilling visions – they all converged here, in this dusty, forgotten sanctuary, with this… entity.
