The scent of old parchment and beeswax clung to Father Michael like a second skin. It was a familiar perfume, one he’d worn for years, a comforting balm against the earthly clamor of the world. But lately, it felt… thinner. As if a chill wind had begun to seep through the very stones of St. Jude’s, carrying with it a subtle, disquieting aroma of something ancient and, he now reluctantly admitted, supernatural. He stood in the quiet sanctity of his study, the flickering flame of a single candle casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to mock the order he once so readily imposed. Elias’s words, once dismissed as the ramblings of a troubled soul, now echoed in the silence, no longer the desperate pleas of a parishioner but the prescient warnings of a seer.

He reached for the worn leather-bound journal on his desk, its pages filled with his own neat, precise script. He’d begun documenting the strange occurrences after Elias’s initial visit, more out of a sense of duty to his flock than any genuine belief in the extraordinary. But the entries had grown longer, the descriptions more vivid, and the coincidences too numerous to ignore. The flickering lights in the nave, the sudden chill that had descended during Sunday Mass, the unsettling dreams that had plagued him, vivid and unsettling, unlike anything he’d experienced before. They were not the simple anxieties of a man grappling with faith; they were glimpses, he now understood, into a reality far more complex and terrifying than he had ever allowed himself to imagine.

He remembered Elias’s wide, earnest eyes, the tremor in his voice as he’d described the whispers, the visions. He’d offered platitudes then, reassurances grounded in the mundane. Stress, Elias. The mind can play tricks when it’s under strain. How hollow those words now sounded. He had seen the fear in Elias’s face, a fear that had, in turn, burrowed its way into his own heart. He had dismissed it, compartmentalized it, clung to the rational like a drowning man to driftwood. But the tide had turned, and the driftwood had rotted away.
