The weight of his shield felt familiar, a comforting heft against his arm, but today it was the lightness of his spirit that truly surprised Leruere. The journey had been long, the whispers of the Formidable Foe growing louder with each passing league, and a gnawing unease had begun to settle in the pit of his stomach. Yet, as he adjusted the worn leather strap of his lute, a melody, tentative at first, began to bloom in his chest. It was a tune he’d hummed since he was a boy, a simple, unassuming thing that always seemed to chase away the shadows.

He remembered the first time he’d sung it in earnest. He’d been scarcely more than a child, sent to guard the village flocks, when a pack of wolves, their eyes like chips of obsidian in the twilight, had descended. Fear had frozen him, his small body trembling. But then, the melody had surfaced, a desperate plea to the heavens, and his voice, thin and reedy, had carried on the wind. The wolves, for a moment, had paused, their snarls softening into curious whimpers, before melting back into the encroaching darkness. It was a small victory, but it had planted a seed. The song, he’d realized, was more than just sound; it was a shield, a comfort, a whisper of courage when his own failed him.

Now, standing at the precipice of a far greater challenge, that same song stirred within him. The Formidable Foe, they said, was a blight upon the land, a creature of grim silence that devoured joy and crushed hope. Their touch withered the vibrant colors of life, leaving behind a monotonous grey. Villages that once echoed with laughter now lay hushed, their inhabitants living in fear, their spirits leached away. And the Foe’s ultimate aim, it was whispered, was to silence Leruere’s song, to extinguish the very spark that had always fueled him.
