The air still carried a faint, metallic tang, a ghost of spilled blood that even the most thorough cleaning couldn’t entirely erase. Officer Vegas, her expression unreadable, was meticulously cataloging a small collection of antique maps spread across the polished mahogany desk.

“Anything, Vegas?” Miles asked, his voice low, almost a murmur. He was tracing the intricate carvings on the fireplace mantel, his fingers moving with a practiced slowness that belied the churning in his gut. Sterling’s death had been clean, too clean for a robbery. No signs of struggle, no forced entry, just a man slumped in his chair, a single, fatal bullet wound.

Vegas shook her head, her movements precise. “Just more of his… eccentricities. Coastal surveys, old trade routes. Nothing that screams ‘murder victim’s secret passion’.” She paused, then added, her gaze flicking to a particular map depicting the treacherous coast of Cornwall. “Though this one… it’s been handled more than the others. Faint smudge here, almost like… ink.”
