Chapter 7
The Storm Breaks
A violent tornado traps Miles, the suspects, and Officer Vegas, Sterling's partner, within the mansion. The isolation heightens the tension, creating a pressure cooker environment for the truth to surface.

Rain lashed against the manor’s imposing stone facade, each drop a tiny hammer blow against the silence that had fallen since Mr. Sterling’s discovery. Officer Miles stood in the grand foyer, the air thick with the scent of aged wood, expensive polish, and something else… something metallic and faintly coppery that clung to the edges of his senses. Officer Vegas, his partner, a woman whose sharp intellect was usually as evident as her perfectly tailored suits, seemed unusually subdued, her gaze darting around the cavernous space as if expecting the shadows to coalesce into a threat.

Miles ran a gloved hand along the smooth, cool surface of a mahogany table. “Or someone had a key. Or he let them in.” He’d seen it too many times. The illusion of security, shattered by the intimate betrayal of a trusted hand. The mansion, a fortress of wealth and secrets, felt less like a crime scene and more like a gilded cage, trapping them all within its opulent confines. The initial assessment of a robbery gone wrong was starting to feel as thin as the silk draperies that stirred restlessly in an unseen draft.
