Business partner Arthur Finch presents a facade of shock, yet Miles senses a hidden agenda. Finch was being squeezed out of a deal. Miles also interviews Sterling's wife, Annabell, whose grief seems performative.
The heavy oak door of Sterling Manor groaned open, a reluctant maw swallowing Officer Miles into its opulent, suffocating embrace. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light that dared to penetrate the gloom, illuminating a tableau of wealth frozen in a moment of brutal interruption. Michael Sterling, the enigmatic millionaire, lay sprawled on the Persian rug, a dark stain blooming on his silk smoking jacket, a stark contrast to the rich crimson of the carpet. The scene was eerily pristine, save for the body. No ransacked drawers, no shattered glass, no overturned furniture. A locked-room mystery, Miles mused, his gaze sweeping across the study. The air hung thick with the scent of old money, polished wood, and something else… something metallic and final.
He knelt beside the deceased, his gloved fingers hovering over the wound. A single, clean shot. Professional. Or personal. The latter felt more likely in a house this guarded, this isolated. His eyes, sharp and accustomed to dissecting the minutiae of chaos, scanned the room again. The mahogany desk, meticulously organized. The leather-bound books lining the walls, their spines unmarred. A half-finished glass of amber liquid sat beside an open ledger, its pages filled with a spidery, almost illegible script. Miles carefully picked up the ledger, the weight of it surprising. This was no ordinary accounting book.
“Anything, Miles?” Officer Vegas’s voice, a low murmur, cut through the oppressive silence. She stood by the doorway, her presence a grounding force in the unsettling stillness.
