Officer Miles, his gaze sweeping over the immaculate façade, felt the familiar prickle of unease that always accompanied a scene of unexplained death. The initial call had been cryptic: a welfare check, a concerned housekeeper, and then the grim discovery. Now, he stood on the threshold, the scent of old money and something distinctly musty clinging to the air.

“No signs of forced entry, Miles,” Officer Vegas’s voice, steady and precise, cut through the quiet. Her partner, a woman whose sharp intellect was as evident as the determined set of her jaw, stood beside him, her notepad already open. “The housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, found him. Said the doors were locked from the inside, and only Mr. Sterling had the key. She had to use her master key to get in after he didn’t answer.”

Miles nodded, his eyes scanning the imposing entryway. Marble floors gleamed under the soft glow of strategically placed spotlights. Portraits of stern-faced ancestors stared down from the walls, their painted eyes seeming to hold a thousand unspoken stories. “Locked from the inside.
