The air in the grand foyer of Sterling Manor hung thick and heavy, a cloying perfume of expensive wood polish and the metallic tang of something far more sinister. Officer Miles stood amidst the hushed chaos, the flashing blue and red lights of the patrol cars outside painting garish streaks across the polished marble floor. Michael Sterling, the reclusive millionaire, lay dead in his study, a single gunshot wound marring the stillness of his once-vigilant gaze.
The scene was a tableau of unsettling order. No forced entry, no overturned furniture, no signs of a struggle that screamed of a desperate, frenzied attack. It was too clean, too precise. Miles, his brow furrowed in that familiar pattern that spoke of a mind already sifting through possibilities, ran a gloved hand over the cool, smooth surface of the grand mahogany desk. His gaze, sharp and unwavering, swept across the room, cataloging every object, every shadow. "Anything, Miles?" Officer Vegas, his partner, a woman whose sharp intellect was often veiled by a cool, collected demeanor, stood by the doorway, her notebook open.
