The air in the grand hall of Sterling Manor was thick with a tension that had nothing to do with the lingering scent of expensive cigars and old money. It was the coiled spring of suspicion, the unspoken accusations hanging heavy between the four figures huddled under the oppressive gaze of ancestral portraits. Officer Miles stood before them, his gaze sweeping across Emily Sterling, a picture of manufactured grief with eyes too sharp, Arthur Finch, his composure a brittle veneer over a predatory stillness, Annabell Sterling, her widow's weeds a dramatic flourish, and Jason Sterling, his youthful face etched with a confusion that felt a shade too practiced. Officer Vegas, a silent, watchful presence, stood by the grand staircase, her expression unreadable.
"We've been over this," Miles began, his voice a low rumble that cut through the suffocating quiet. "No forced entry. The windows were locked from the inside. The doors, bolted. Mr. Sterling was shot in his study, a room that was sealed tighter than a drum." He paused, letting the impossibility of it all settle. "Which means the killer was already inside. Or, they had a key."
Emily sniffled, dabbing at dry eyes with a lace handkerchief. "But who would do this? Michael… he had no enemies."
