The Confrontation

The air in the grand drawing-room of Sterling Manor hung thick and heavy, a palpable tension mirroring the tempest that raged outside. Rain lashed against the tall, arched windows, each gust of wind rattling the ancient panes like a skeletal hand seeking entry. Inside, the only light emanated from a few strategically placed lamps, casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to writhe and twist with the unspoken anxieties of the occupants. Emily Sterling, her face a mask of carefully constructed grief, clutched a lace handkerchief, her eyes red-rimmed and pleading. Beside her, Arthur Finch maintained an air of detached professionalism, his tailored suit a stark contrast to the development of the others. Annabell Sterling, draped in a silk robe that whispered of old money and new anxieties, sat regally on a velvet chaise, her expression unreadable, a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing on her lips. And then there was Jason Sterling, younger, his posture stiff with a simmering resentment, his gaze darting nervously between Miles and the others. Officer Vegas stood a respectful distance behind Miles, her presence as a quiet anchor in the swirling chaos.

"Thank you all for agreeing to this… informal gathering," Miles began, his voice calm, measured, cutting through the oppressive silence. "The storm outside has made any further travel impossible, and I felt it was time we brought all the pieces of this puzzle together." He paused, letting the weight of his words settle. "Mr. Michael Sterling was found dead in his study, a room locked from the inside. No forced entry. No signs of a struggle, at least not in the conventional sense."
