The rain lashed against the gothic windows of Sterling Manor, each dropping a tiny hammer blow against the silence that had settled over the grand, yet somber, estate. Officer Miles stood in the cavernous study, the air thick with the scent of aged paper, expensive leather, and something else… something metallic and cold that clung to the very marrow of the room. Mr. Michael Sterling, the enigmatic millionaire, lay sprawled across his Persian rug, a dark stain blooming outwards from his chest, a testament to a life abruptly, brutally ended.
Miles ran a gloved hand over the polished mahogany of Sterling’s desk. No sign of forced entry, the windows sealed tight, the heavy oak door locked from the inside. It screamed of intimacy, of a killer known, of a betrayal that cut deeper than any bullet. His gaze drifted to the meticulously organized shelves, the rows of leather-bound volumes standing like silent sentinels. There was a disarray here, a subtle ripple in the otherwise perfect order that prickled at his instincts. A single book, a thick tome on Renaissance art, lay askew, its spine jutting out at an unnatural angle.
“Anything, Miles?” Officer Vegas’s voice, calm and measured, cut through the oppressive quiet. She stood by the doorway, her sharp eyes scanning the room with an almost unnerving efficiency.
