The air in the marketplace hummed with a thousand conversations, a symphony of bartering and laughter that Elara usually found invigorating. Today, however, a discordant note vibrated beneath the surface, a tension that seemed to emanate from the edges of her awareness. She adjusted the basket of herbs on her hip, her gaze sweeping over the bustling stalls. It was Kael. He stood near the fruit vendor, his striking features set in an unnervingly charming smile as he spoke to a cluster of women, his eyes, however, kept straying towards Elara. She felt a familiar prickle of unease, a sensation that had become increasingly common whenever Kael was near.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over her. She didn’t need to look up to know who it was. Zayne. His presence was a palpable force, a stillness that cut through the surrounding chaos. He didn’t speak, but his sheer proximity was enough. Kael’s easy banter faltered, his smile tightening almost imperceptibly. She shook her head, dismissing the unsettling feeling. Zayne was simply… Zayne. A force of nature, perhaps, but one that rarely acknowledged her directly.

Days bled into weeks, each marked by the subtle, almost invisible threads of Zayne’s presence. He was never overtly there, yet his influence was everywhere. When she ventured too close to the treacherous Whispering Falls, a sudden, inexplicable downpour would drive her back, the path suddenly slick and dangerous. When the merchant, Old Man Hemlock, cornered her with his leering advances, Zayne’s deep, resonant voice would cut through the air, a casual query about the price of grain that drew Hemlock’s attention, and Elara’s escape. She found herself cataloging these instances, a quiet curiosity growing within her. It was odd, these coincidences. Or were they?
