The air in the cavern still hummed with residual magic, a faint thrum against Elara’s skin that mirrored the frantic beat of her own heart. The stench of scorched earth and something metallic, something that might have been blood, clung to the damp stone, a grim reminder of the battle they had just survived. Kael stood a few paces away, his shadow-magic still swirling around him like a restless cloak, obscuring the sharp angles of his face in the flickering torchlight. He was breathing hard, the rise and fall of his chest a visible testament to the exertion, yet there was a stillness in his posture, a quiet intensity that drew Elara’s gaze like a moth to a flame.

They were clenched at his sides, the knuckles white. She remembered the way he had looked at her then, after the light had faded, after the immediate danger had passed. It wasn't the look of a rival, nor of an enemy. It was a look that had stripped away all pretense, all defenses, and laid bare something ancient and profound. It was a look that had mirrored the turmoil raging within her own chest, a turmoil she had fought tooth and nail to suppress.
