The dust settled, a hazy veil obscuring the aftermath of the chaotic battle. Scott Wonders, his usual jovial demeanor replaced by a stunned bewilderment, slowly pushed himself to his feet. His armor was scuffed, his breathing ragged, but his eyes, wide with disbelief, met Billy’s. “Billy… Lisa… thank you,” he rasped, his voice thick with emotion. “You saved me. You both saved me.” He gestured vaguely towards where Jerome Rodriguez had been moments before, a flicker of concern crossing his face. “That man… he was too much.”

Billy, his own frame aching from the exertion, offered a small, tight nod. He’d seen the desperation in Jerome’s eyes, the desperate scramble for something he clearly valued above all else. But now, where the man had been, there was only disturbed earth and a few scattered rocks. The treasure, whatever it was, and Jerome himself had vanished into the shadows of the cave, a ghost slipping through their grasp. A cold knot of unease began to tighten in Billy’s stomach. He met Lisa’s gaze, and saw the same dawning apprehension reflected there. They had dealt with Loon, or at least, they thought they had. But Jerome, a more elusive threat, had slipped away, and with him, whatever he was after. “He’s gone,” Billy stated, the words feeling hollow. “And the treasure… it’s gone too.”

Lisa, her elastic limbs still humming with residual energy, frowned. “That’s… not good, is it?” she murmured, her voice tinged with worry. Her gaze then flickered towards the cavern entrance, a place she knew Betty had retreated to, consumed by a grief Billy and Lisa could only imagine. The immediate threat of Loon had been neutralized, but the emotional fallout was just beginning. “Betty,” she breathed, a sudden urgency in her tone. “We need to find Betty.”
