Chapter 19
Jealousy towards Success
The next day, Betty began training her mind and muscles for her upcoming first mission with Lori Pascallian. Kastor acknowledges their hard work and decides to treat them to something to eat. Aside from Kastor, the other members of the Yellow Disk started becoming jealous of Betty getting all the attention of Damian Yole. Damian seemed to favour her over everybody else in the team,as if he has a crush on her. Soon, Damian Yole told Betty and Lori that they are finally going on their first mission: transporting a man named Colt Brussels to Canada. Lori was expecting something else, like a battle somewhere or something like that. They went on their way to Canada. On the way,Colt talked to Betty and asked her how it's been these past few weeks. Kastor didn't think these questions were necessary or ordinary at all.
The morning after their triumphant return, a different kind of intensity settled over Betty. It wasn't the raw, explosive energy of battle, but the focused hum of preparation. She stretched, her muscles responding with a familiar ache, and then closed her eyes, her mind delving into the intricate dance of black magic and the subtle currents of the wind. Her nascent powers, honed by Brandon’s patient guidance, felt more attuned than ever. Beside her, Lori Pascallian mirrored her movements, her touch gentle as she guided Betty through breathing exercises, her own nature and healing powers radiating a quiet strength.
Kastor Campbell, Steelio himself, observed them from a short distance. A wry smile touched his lips. He’d seen their dedication, the sheer grit they exuded despite their youth. “Alright, you two,” he announced, his voice carrying a surprising warmth. “You’ve earned yourselves a break. My treat. What do you say to some of Mrs. Gable’s legendary doughnuts? Best in the city.”
Betty and Lori exchanged pleased glances. Even Kastor, with his ambitious drive, could recognize hard work. As they headed towards the bustling city center, however, a different atmosphere began to permeate the Yellow Disk’s headquarters. Whispers, subtle at first, then more pronounced, began to circulate among the team. Betty, the newcomer, was receiving an unusual amount of attention from Damian Yole, their leader. It wasn’t just about her prowess; there was a distinct favoritism, a lingering gaze, a special project assigned to her that seemed to eclipse everyone else's. Some members felt overlooked, their own hard-won achievements overshadowed by Betty’s meteoric rise. A quiet resentment began to simmer, a jealousy born from perceived favoritism. Damian, oblivious or perhaps intentionally oblivious, seemed captivated by Betty’s intellect and her unique command of her powers, seeing in her a potential that eclipsed even his most seasoned warriors.
