A Spark of Miracle

The air hung thick with the acrid stench of burnt timber and despair. Ash, like a shroud, coated everything, muffling the cries of the wounded and the guttural roars of the Shadow Lord’s monstrous foot soldiers. Jesus, his armor scarred and his face grim, deflected a vicious blow from a hulking brute, the clash of steel echoing the discord in his own heart. Beside him, Sarah fought with a ferocity that belied the grim odds, her sword a blur of silver against the encroaching darkness. Yet, even her unwavering spirit seemed to flicker under the oppressive weight of defeat.

The village of Bethany, once a beacon of vibrant life, was now a smoldering ruin. The Shadow Lord’s forces had descended like a plague, their dark magic twisting the very earth and the hearts of men. Jesus had arrived too late, his legendary prowess as a warrior overshadowed by the devastating speed of the enemy’s conquest. He had rallied the scattered remnants of the free peoples, a meager force against an overwhelming tide. But the greatest battle, he knew, was not against the hulking abominations before him, but within the hearts of his own kin.

His mother, Mary, her face etched with a weariness that went beyond mere physical exhaustion, stood a stone’s throw away, tending to a fallen soldier. Her eyes, once so full of warmth, now held a deep, unyielding skepticism whenever they met his. Beside her, his brother Judas, his jaw set in a mask of grim determination, fought with a desperate fury. But there was no camaraderie between them, only a chasm of years and unspoken accusations. Judas fought not for the cause, but for survival, and perhaps, Jesus suspected, to prove himself worthy of a world his elder brother had abandoned.
