It was a sound Hermes knew, a sound that had been growing louder with each passing cycle of the sun. The spaces between, the liminal realms he so effortlessly traversed, were fraying, their gossamer threads thinning, threatening to snap entirely. This wasn't just a minor inconvenience, a missed delivery, or a lost soul. This was the fabric of existence itself beginning to unravel.
He stood on a windswept peak, the usual vibrant hues of the mortal world muted, as if seen through a layer of dust. Below, the familiar landscapes shimmered, indistinct, like a painted backdrop on the verge of collapsing. The wind, his oldest friend, tugged at his tunic, not with its usual playful caress, but with a desperate, urgent whisper. It carried the scent of ozone and something else… something akin to fear.
“This is no good,” he muttered, his voice barely audible above the wind’s lament. He’d tried to ignore it, to outrun it, to charm his way out of acknowledging the growing dissonance. But the whispers had become shouts, the tremors had become tremors that rattled the very foundations of the cosmos. The borders were collapsing, and the cracks were widening into chasms.
