The polished obsidian of Shella’s office gleamed under the muted desk lamp, reflecting a distorted image of the woman seated behind it. Her gaze, usually sharp and piercing, was softened by a faraway tenderness, a stark contrast to the formidable aura she commanded. The scent of wilting roses, a faint echo of Mika’s shop, seemed to cling to the air, a phantom perfume that had become Shella’s constant, unwelcome companion. She traced the cool surface of her desk, the silence of the room amplifying the turmoil brewing within her. The fortress around her heart, once impenetrable, was showing cracks, widening with each stolen moment spent with Mika.

A sharp rap on the door, devoid of the usual deference, shattered the quiet. Before Shella could even register the intrusion, the door swung open, revealing Dante. He stood silhouetted against the dim hallway, his presence a thunderclap in the fragile peace Shella had begun to cultivate. His eyes, hard and assessing, swept over her, lingering on the almost imperceptible softness that had begun to soften the sharp angles of her face.

“Shella,” Dante’s voice was a low rumble, devoid of its usual respect, laced with a dangerous edge. He stepped into the room, closing the door with a decisive click that echoed the finality of a tomb sealing. “You’ve been absent.”
