The scent of wilting roses and stale cigar smoke clung to Shella Mae like a second skin, a perfume she'd worn for years, a testament to the life she’d carved out of shadows and steel. Tonight, however, the familiar aroma felt cloying, suffocating. She stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of her penthouse, the city lights blurring into a watercolor of neon and despair below. Each flicker was a reminder of the world she inhabited, a world of deals struck in hushed tones, of loyalty bought with blood, and of a power that demanded constant vigilance.
But lately, the city’s glare seemed dimmer, its siren song muted. All Shella could see, all she could hear, was the silent symphony of Mika's laughter, the gentle rustle of petals as she arranged bouquets, the soft tap of her fingers against glass. Mika, the sunshine in her meticulously constructed darkness. Mika, the deaf and mute girl who had, with an innocence Shella had long since shed, burrowed into the very core of her being.
Dante’s voice, a gravelly rumble that had once been a source of comfort, now grated on her nerves. He stood a few feet away, his arms crossed, his gaze sharp and accusatory. “You’re losing your edge, Shella. This… distraction. It’s making you soft.”
