Sunlight, usually a welcome guest, felt like an unwelcome spotlight, highlighting the dust motes dancing in the strained silence. Shella sat behind her obsidian desk, her posture rigid, her gaze fixed on the holographic display flickering with financial reports that held no interest for her. Her mind, a finely tuned instrument of war and strategy, was miles away, lost in the vibrant hues of a flower shop and the gentle cadence of a silent smile.
Dante stood before her, his usual swagger replaced by a carefully constructed deference that grated on Shella’s nerves like sandpaper on silk. He was a creature of the old ways, a relic of the brutal efficiency that had carved Shella’s empire from the city's underbelly. He saw Mika not as a person, but as a vulnerability, a soft spot in the impenetrable armor Shella had spent a lifetime forging.
“Shella,” Dante began, his voice low and smooth, a serpent’s hiss. “There are whispers. Concerns about your… focus.”
