The scent of lemon polish and old paper hung in the air of Mr. Abernathy’s study, a familiar comfort that had always soothed Eleanor Vance’s nerves. Sunlight, softened by the lace curtains, cast a gentle glow on the overflowing bookshelves and the comfortable, worn leather armchair where she sat. Mr. Abernathy, a man whose kindness was etched into the fine lines around his eyes, poured them both a cup of tea, his movements steady despite his advanced years.
“You seem troubled, my dear,” he observed, his voice a low, melodic rumble. He placed a delicate china cup before her, its steam curling upwards like a wispy secret.
Eleanor hesitated, her fingers tracing the rim of her teacup. How could she explain the tremor in her hands, the constant hum of anxiety that had become her unwelcome companion since her encounter with the enigmatic woman known as ‘The Nightingale’? How could she articulate the strange, intoxicating allure of the hidden world she had glimpsed, a world of shadowed alleys and whispered conspiracies, a world so starkly different from her own carefully curated existence?
