Eleanor traced the intricate patterns of the newly deciphered message, her fingertip dancing over the faint ink. The scent of old paper and the subtle perfume of her companion, a blend of jasmine and something sharper, more elusive, filled the small room. It was a scent she was beginning to associate with a quickening pulse, a breath held too long. The gaslight flickered, casting dancing shadows that seemed to mimic the clandestine world they now inhabited.
“Remarkable, Eleanor,” The Nightingale’s voice, a low murmur, brushed against her ear like silk. “You’ve untangled it faster than I anticipated.”
Eleanor offered a small, shy smile, though her heart thrummed with a pleasure that went beyond the intellectual triumph. It was the praise, the quiet admiration in The Nightingale’s gaze, that truly set her alight. “The patterns were… persistent,” she said, her own voice a little breathy. “Once I saw the repeating sequence, the rest began to fall into place.”
