The air in the abandoned warehouse, thick with the scent of damp wood and forgotten industry, vibrated with a tension that had been building for weeks. Eleanor stood beside The Nightingale, their backs pressed together, a silent pact forged in the crucible of shared peril. The flickering gaslight from a single lamp cast long, dancing shadows that distorted the already grim surroundings, making it impossible to discern friend from foe in the gloom. Lord Ashworth, his usual veneer of benevolent authority stripped away to reveal a chilling avarice, stood a few paces away, his hand outstretched, not in greeting, but in a gesture of possession, of triumph.
“You’ve been a most valuable asset, Miss Vance,” Ashworth purred, his voice a silken thread that barely masked the steel beneath. “Your… peculiar talent has proven most useful. And you, my dear Nightingale, have certainly earned your reputation.”
The Nightingale’s gaze, usually a cool, appraising blue, was alight with a dangerous fire. “You underestimate us, Ashworth,” she said, her voice low and steady, a stark contrast to the tremor Eleanor felt deep within her own chest. “And that, my lord, will be your undoing.”
