The scent of old paper and beeswax, usually a comfort to Eleanor, now felt cloying, heavy with unspoken anxieties. Across the polished mahogany table, The Nightingale’s gaze, usually sharp and assessing, was clouded with a weariness Eleanor hadn't seen before. “It points to an inside job, Eleanor,” The Nightingale said, her voice a low murmur that barely disturbed the silence. “The security measures were… thorough. Only someone with intimate knowledge of our preparations could have bypassed them.”

Eleanor traced the rim of her teacup, the porcelain cool against her fingertips. Inside. The word echoed in the quiet, a chilling accusation. They had been so careful, so meticulous. Every contact vetted, every meeting shrouded in discretion. Who among them harboured such duplicity? The faces of the few people they had interacted with, the individuals who knew of their mission’s existence, swam before her eyes. Lord Ashworth, with his affable smiles and seemingly helpful suggestions, had been their primary conduit to the necessary governmental channels. He had vouched for the security protocols, assured them of their safety. Could it be him? The thought was a cold knot in her stomach. He seemed so… solid. So British.
