Saturday arrived without urgency, the morning light slanting through the kitchen windows in long, golden rectangles. Chris moved through her routine more slowly than usual, her hands busy with the coffee press and the eggs, her mind elsewhere. David came downstairs in his gardening clothes, smelling of soap and sleep, and kissed the back of her neck.
"No plans today?" he asked, reaching for a mug.
"Not really. I thought I'd make a nice brunch, maybe call the kids."
