She slipped out of bed and padded to the kitchen, her bare feet cool on the tile. She filled the kettle, set it to boil, and stood at the window, watching the garden stir. The robin was there, perched on the fence, its head tilted as if listening to some distant song. Chris smiled, a small, private smile.
By the time David came downstairs, dressed in his weekend clothes, the coffee was brewed and the table was set. He kissed her cheek, his lips warm against her skin. "You're up early."
