Anya, still feeling like a perfectly dressed pawn in a game she hadn't quite grasped, found herself steered toward a plush velvet settee by Elara, her… wife. They sat in a corner, away from the throng of dignitaries and their preening consorts. Elara, with a grace that Anya was beginning to find both infuriating and fascinating, had excused herself from the more tedious mingling. Anya, meanwhile, felt her mind doing somersaults. She’d spent eighteen years preparing for a husband, a prince, a king, someone who would fit neatly into the prescribed role of her life. Instead, she had Elara: sharp, decisive, and radiating an aura of power that was both intimidating and, Anya had to admit, rather intoxicating.

“You’re quiet,” Elara observed, her voice a low murmur that cut through the ambient din. She took a sip of champagne, her gaze never leaving Anya’s face. It was a look that felt both assessing and… something else. Something softer than Anya expected from a ruler.
